Chapter 12

I didn’t feel like being alone. I probably would’ve gotten drunk and done something stupid. So, I took a shower and changed clothes, planning to head over to Lizzie’s. At least I would have someone to commiserate with, and then maybe we could come back to my place for the night.

My reflection looked like hell when I got out of the shower. My nose was still slightly swollen from the night of the potluck, and the yellowing bruises under my eyes made me look jaundice. The bump on my head was red and angry, roughly the size of a golf ball, and throbbed to no end. Lizzie was studying to be a nurse and would know what to do. Maybe she’d even have some good drugs or at least something stronger than Anacin.

Kids were shrieking and running about as I walked to Lizzie’s. After-school activities had just finished, so the children who were finally relieved of Little League and other clubs were turned loose on the community at large. In a small town where everyone knew everyone, it was safe to let your kids run free. Mothers just warned them to stay out of the street and come home when it got dark. Other than that, they could roam. It was so different from the city with its constant hustle and flow of people or traffic.

Nostalgia took me back to my own childhood for a moment. Running home from school to ditch my bag and books, grab a snack, and then head off to the city park for a pickup game of baseball or basketball. Playing horse or home run derby when there weren’t enough for teams. Splashing in the creek next to the park that cuts through the middle of town whenever there was a practice or the high schoolers wouldn’t let us “babies” play with them. Having delirious fun over the fact that we were free, with no cares, then losing track of time and rushing home in a panic, afraid our parents would skin us alive.

By the time I got to Lizzie’s place, I was in a far better mood than I would’ve believed an hour ago. The air was filled with the scent of freshly mowed lawns and dinners cooking. Carried on a breeze was a hint of approaching autumn. Cicada’s sung somewhere in the distance, mingling with the sounds of tractors as they hauled their harvests off to housing. Everything was so alive. It made me forget my problems, to want to just sit on the porch with a pitcher of tea and watch the sunset.

If I hadn’t just had my head kicked in and my dog kidnapped.

Lizzie came out of the house as I mounted the steps. She looked gorgeous, even in a plain t-shirt and jeans. Her lovely hair was pulled up in a messy bun under a faded bandanna. There was a stained rag in one hand and a pair of heavy-duty yellow gloves in the other. I had obviously interrupted her cleaning, and she looked happy for the excuse.
